Ten dead after Israel boards Gaza-bound ships

May 31, 2010 (Reuters) - Israeli commandos intercepted Gaza-bound aid ships Monday and at least 10 pro-Palestinian activists on board were killed in bloodshed that plunged Israel into a diplomatic crisis.

Israel's military said its troops came under gunfire and knife attack during the takeover.

Closed Zone: The 'Waltz With Bashir' Animator Animates Gaza Siege

Yoni Goodman, the Israeli animator who animated the award-winning, Oscar-nominated, animated documentary "Waltz With Bashir" has just released "Closed Zone" a 90-second animated short film about Gaza.

In it, a Palestinian in Gaza goes chasing after a blue bird, only to be turned back by imposing, massive hands as he approaches Gaza's borders.

The Palestinian watches rockets soar out of Gaza and hit an Israeli town. Then he is boxed in by the hands as he tries to escape from Israel's military counter-strike.
Goodman created the film for Gisha, an Israeli human rights group that has long challenged Israel's policies towards Gaza, especially the restrictions imposed on humanitarian aid to the 1.4 million Palestinians living there.

"The war made this film a mission for me," Goodman said in a short companion video on "The Making of Closed Zone."

Gaza And Its Aftermath (by Noam Chomsky)

For more than three weeks, starting December 27th, Gaza and its 1.5 million people bore the brunt of a massive Israeli military campaign, supported and abetted by the US government. While Israel has now stopped its devastating air and ground operations in Gaza, it continues the total blockade from both the land and the sea, still pursuing the futile goal of trying to destroy Hamas and allied resistance groups by punishing the population around them.

Noam Chomsky gives a preliminary assessment of the US-Israel war on Gaza and its consequences in an interview conducted by Assaf Kfoury on January 31, 2009. The Arabic translation of the interview will appear in the Beirut daily as-Safir.

The public response in the US:

"Exterminate all the Brutes": Gaza 2009

By Noam Chomsky

On Saturday December 27, the latest US-Israeli attack on helpless Palestinians was launched. The attack had been meticulously planned, for over 6 months according to the Israeli press. The planning had two components: military and propaganda. It was based on the lessons of Israel's 2006 invasion of Lebanon, which was considered to be poorly planned and badly advertised. We may, therefore, be fairly confident that most of what has been done and said was pre-planned and intended.

That surely includes the timing of the assault: shortly before noon, when children were returning from school and crowds were milling in the streets of densely populated Gaza City. It took only a few minutes to kill over 225 people and wound 700, an auspicious opening to the mass slaughter of defenseless civilians trapped in a tiny cage with nowhere to flee.

Obama on Israel-Palestine (by Noam Chomsky)

Barack Obama is recognized to be a person of acute intelligence, a legal scholar, careful with his choice of words. He deserves to be taken seriously - both what he says, and what he omits. Particularly significant is his first substantive statement on foreign affairs, on January 22, at the State Department, when introducing George Mitchell to serve as his special envoy for Middle East peace.

An inside story of how the US magnified Palestinian suffering

A million and a half Palestinians are learning the hard way that democracy isn't so good if you vote the wrong way. In 2006, they elected Hamas when the US and Israel wanted them to support the more-moderate Fatah. As a result, having long ago lost their homes and property, Gazans have endured three years of embargo, crippling shortages of food and basic necessities, and total economic collapse.

We spoke again Saturday with three of our longtime Gazan contacts. They and their families, all Fatah supporters, were in their eleventh day without electricity, running water, or heat. They are cowering in cold basements trying to protect their children from the storm of explosions that is filling Shifa hospital with amputees and the dead. Our friends in Israel are likewise living in fear.

Israel: Gaza Ground Offensive Raises Laws of War Concerns

As an Israeli ground offensive in Gaza gets underway, both Israeli and Palestinian forces must address heightened civilian protection concerns because of likely combat in densely populated urban areas, Human Rights Watch said today. Both sides must stringently abide by the laws of war, including taking all feasible measures to avoid harm to civilians and facilitating access for humanitarian workers and medical personnel.

Human Rights Watch investigations of previous ground operations in Gaza and the West Bank by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) found evidence of unlawful killings by Israeli forces. In addition, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups fired rockets or conducted other military operations from densely populated areas, placing civilians at risk of serious harm.
