Nate Silver’s website FiveThirtyEight gained attention during the 2008 presidential election. Using his background in statistics, Silver aggregated polling data from each state to successfully predict the winner of every primary election and the presidential winner in 49 states. Consequently, his website is now cited by media outlets such as The New York Times.
Fellow geek Max Little developed a voice analysis program which can detect Parkinson’s disease. His software has a remarkable 98.6 accuracy rate and helps people seek treatment before the disease progresses. His contributions show that geeks have the potential to save lives.
