Washington Fears A Disaster In Pakistan

The progression of the Talibans is a serious threat to the very existence of Pakistan, the only Muslim country holding the atomic bomb.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, are concerned about the risk that nuclear weapons fall into the wrong hands.

According to The New York Times, Buner, one of the most important and strategic districts of the country, has fallen into the hands of the Taliban.

Buner, about 60 miles from Islamabad, is a gateway to Mardan, the second largest city in the province of the North-West Frontier. In establishing an effective and strategic control of the Buner district, the Talibans have demonstrated the inability of the government and the army to stop them.

Local authorities recognize the Taliban advance and the lack of resistance to the growing number of extremists who are "everywhere", according to an official. Some government officials were forced to leave the district. TV shows Pakistani Taliban patrolling the streets and imposing their own law under the force of arms. "They took Buner, and will soon take Mardan and this will be the end of the game," acknowledged a local official.

Last week the Taliban imposed the Sharia (Islamic law) in the Swat Valley, the North West region bordering Afghanistan, after the peace agreement with the Government.

The insurgents took up arms in Swat in late 2007. They have destroyed more than 200 women's colleges as part of acampaign against the education of women and caused the displacement of thousands of people fleeing violence.

Islamabad tries to contain this development and has strengthened the area today by sending soldiers to Buner.

Nearly two hundred members of the border guards have been deployed in the northern district in order to control the Taliban insurgency.

Alarm at the White House

Washington fears the disintegration of the Pakistani state.

Responsible for U.S. Foreign Policy, Hillary Clinton, did not hesitate to warn yesterday that the Government of Azif Ali Zardari had failed in its strategy to fight the Taliban. (read on CNN Clinton: Pakistan in danger)

"I think we can not underestimate the seriousness of the threat to the State of Pakistan caused by the advance of terrorists, who are now a few hours from Islamabad," said Clinton before the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
