Sumatra Second Earthquake Leaves Above 500 Dead

Oct. 1, 2009 - Earthquakes give no respite to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, left yesterday in chaos and tragedy since a 7.6 magnitude earthquake and hit this morning at 9.31 am (3.31 GMT) by a new tremor of 6.8 magnitude.

The epicenter was established 155 km northwest of Bengkulu, a town of 340,000 people south of Padang, the city worst hit by the first of the earthquakes.

At least 529 people have died and over 450 were seriously injured confirmed today by the Indonesian authorities, who fear that thousands may still be trapped under rubbles.

Acording to local authorities, 376 deaths were recorded in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province, where the death toll may continue to rise as more bodies are recovered from the wreckage.
