The Sri Lankan Army has proclaimed the final victory in the bloody war against the Tamil Tigers, after announcing the death of the LTTE leader.
A military source has informed the Reuters news agency that the leader of the Liberation Front Earth Tamil (LTTE), Vellupillai Prabahakaran, has died in the combat zone while trying to flee the military offensive.
"It is confirmed that Prabahakaran was killed while trying to escape in an ambulance before dawn. We are waiting for the official announcement by the president," said a military spokesman who wished to remain anonymous.
The same military sources have reported that hundreds of Tigers have been killed in the fighting. Along with the Tamil leader, Portu Rabbah, number two of the separatist group, and Charles Anthony, son of Prabahakaran are also reported dead.
The Tamil rebels acknowledged their defeat and surrendered to the government troops. Selvarajah Pathmanathan, director of external relations of the Tamil rebels, reports that in the last 24 hours, 3000 Tamil civilians were killed and another 25,000 were injured and did not have "health care". "We must do everything we can to stop this carnage. If this means silencing our guns and go into a peace process, that is something that we have already agreed," Pathmanathan said.
United Nations (UN) reported "a bloodbath" in the fighting between the military and the rebels. According to humanitarian organizations, over 100,000 civilians fled the bombing of the army in the narrow strip on the northeastern coast of the island.
Sri Lankan government denies having used bombing and heavy weapons and says that the responsability of the slaughter is on the rebels' side, who send Kalashnikov-armed children and old people against the troops and used civilians as human shields.
