An earthquake of 7.1 magnitude on the Richter scale has caused at least one death and extensive damages in Honduras.
According to preliminary reports from the Fire Department and the Permanent Commission of Contingencies (COPECO) at least 30 homes collapsed in the municipalities of Yoro, El Progreso, Santa Barbara, Puerto Cortes and Gracias, regions in the north and west of the country.
The head of the regional COPECO in San Pedro Sula, Carlos Gonzalez, said that a person has died and another was injured in a house collapse in the municipality of La Lima.
After the earthquake, which occurred around 02.26 local time (08.26 UTC), there have been at least three replicates of about 4 degrees on the Richter scale.
Strong tremors were also felt in northern and western Nicaragua, waking up part of the population, but no damage nor casualties were reported.
In the municipality of El Progreso, the bridge "La Democracia", a French engineering works opened in 1963 and had withstood strong hurricanes, was damaged, and communication between that city and San Pedro Sula, the second largest in the country, have been suspended.
Authorities have asked the inhabitants of the departments of Atlantida and Colon to evacuate, "slowly and in order", and to seek sites with at least a height of three meters, as a possible Tsunami could occur and cause much damage.
The NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned at 8:33 (UTC) of a possible tsunami affecting the coasts of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and other parts of the Caribbean.
The tsunami alert was cancelled at 09:32 (UTC).Read »
