Undiscovered Greek Beaches

Travelling in Greece can be an unforgettable experience depending on where you choose to go. Most Europeans who have been in Greece visit pretty much the same 5-10 islands just because it is convenient. The fact, however, that most of them do not go back to Greece in the following years says it all about their experience: touristy resorts, cheap bars with questionable quality of drinks, very basic food and some of the most crowded and not spectacular at all beaches.

Having spent numerous summers in the country I had the chance to experiment with non popular destinations and what I experienced was beyond my imagination. Many people think that they have to travel as far as Brazil or the Philippines in order to enjoy some really peaceful and relaxed time on the beach where the least number of people would be around. However, I can’t remember how many times I found myself all alone on deserted picturesque beaches in July and August!

Greece has a massive coastline of 13676 (8496 miles)) with a population of 11 million people, while the whole UK has 12,429 kilometres with almost 60 million people population. Spain has around 5,000 kilometres with a population of 40m people, France has 3,427 (60m people), Turkey 7,200(80m people). That explains why it is possible in Greece to be at the beach just you and your family without seeing any other people at all around you, as long as you know where to go.

The best way to find out most of that paradise like places is either by experimenting or by asking the Greeks where they go. It is unlikely that they will come up with answers like Rhodes, Mykonos and Santorini and instead you will hear of some other names which without writing them down on a piece of paper you will definitely forget after a few seconds.

It is a fact that Greeks don’t like massive crowds of tourists wondering around where they hang out in the summer and some of them may even get angry if you turn up in that beach they used to be hanging out for years. It’s true that each one has his favourite spots and they normally wouldn’t like to tell others about those, especially if they think that doing so will signify the end of their beloved place. Therefore you need to approach them in a different way and be respectful of any place they mention.

The Cyclades, offer so many great idyllic islands to visit with your family, within just a few hours of reach either from Athens or some bigger neighbouring island. Names such as Kythnos, Tinos, Folegandros, Sikinos, Kimolos, Donousa and Anafi won’t ring a bell but once you visit any of those and you find your “personal” beach, it is unlikely that you will think of trying to find some other place for next year’s vacations. Those destinations have similar geography and one thing in common is the lack of trees so you will definitely need some protection from the sun.

If you cannot make it without trees though, then just try other destinations such as Ikaria and Samothraki (with rivers, waterfalls and the like) in the north or try Paxous and Ithaki, located in the west part of the country. Why do people hang out in busy, loud and ugly places while they have the chance to be on their own or just with their beloved friends or family members is a question I never managed to answer.
