Unlike a desktop computer putting a laptop can be a little more complicated. Unfortunately there are not many resources available to help when it comes to building laptops. The aim of this article is therefore to talk you through the steps you will need to put together you own high speed laptop.
With a desktop computer you have a wide assortment of hardware components to choose from all of which slot together with a few screws here and there. But when it comes to laptops there is a little less choice and things are a bit trickier.
The first step is to get yourself a barebones laptop kit. For the most choice I would recommend looking online as these are a little too niche to be stocked in your local electronics shop. The most important aspects of a barebones system will be the processor, graphics support and the size of the screen. Make sure you take your time choosing your barebones systems as this will become the foundation for your laptop. Some brands to look out for include Asus, MSI and ECS.
With regards to the processor you have a couple of options. The first is to use a standard desktop processor but the issue here is that it will run a lot hotter and use more energy than its mobile equivalent. The downside of the mobile processors is that they will cost you more.
Bear in mind that unlike desktop computers not all components are upgradable. So if you are a fan of gaming you need to check and make sure that your laptop has a decent graphics card or one that can be upgraded.
Obviously screen size comes down to personal choice. Get a smaller screen for a more portable machine or a bit bigger to make the most of games and movies. The difference with the barebones systems is that you some components like the disc drives and motherboard are not changeable. Regarding the other components it will be a case of searching online and asking in forums to get an idea of what’s available.
Now you have all your components it’s time to open the system up. Using a small screw driver you will need to remove the back plate of your laptop. Once open take extra care not to touch the processor socket as this area is not always protected and any damage will render your laptop useless. To install the processor lift the arm by the socket and carefully line your processor up. Try not to slide the chip and once in place lower the arm back down, which will click into place. You should also have some form of heat sink that will be screwed over the processor. Make sure you use thermal paste if none is provided.
After the processor is in place you will want to add your video card. Slowly lower this in to the socket and secure with the provided screws. If you have additional heat sinks for the graphics processor then now would be the time to install them. Your hard drive should simply click into place and can then be secured using some screws. Finally you will need to slot your RAM into the motherboard.
Put the back plate onto your newly created laptop and screw it up. Now comes your moment of glory, make sure you have a charged battery and plug into the mains as well. Push the power button and you should be greeted with the BIOS menu as long as everything went to plan.
