Copenhagen 2009: Chronicle Of A Failure Foretold

December 19, 2009 - The COP15 final declaration is an agreement to save face rather an agreement to save the planet.

All developed countries have reaffirmed their willingness to limit global temperature increase to not more than 2° Celsius but nothing has been said about the measures to achieve this goal, apart from vague promises: no legal constraints, targets for greenhouse gases reduction far under IPCC's recommendations, no independent monitoring of actual progress made in each country.

Copenhagen 2009: Climate Summit Turns Into Chaos

December 14, 2009 - African countries, supported by members of the G77, withdraw from the talks because of the refusal of rich countries to negotiate more binding reductions.

The beginning of the most critical week of the Copenhagen Climate Summit could not have been more chaotic. While long queues of people were waiting outside to enter a completely overcrowded conference center, African countries, supported by the G77 group of developing countries, have left the negotiation table due to the refusal of rich countries to discuss a legally binding emissions treaty.

Jeremy Hobbs, Executive Director of Oxfam International said:

Our Leaders Are Staging A Scam In Copenhagen

Every delegate to the Copenhagen summit is being greeted by the sight of a vast fake planet dominating the city’s central square. This swirling globe is covered with corporate logos - the Coke brand is stamped over Africa, while Carlsberg appears to own Asia, and McDonald’s announces “I’m loving it!” in great red letters above. “Welcome to Hopenhagen!” it cries. It is kept in the sky by endless blasts of hot air.

This plastic planet is the perfect symbol for this summit. The world is being told that this is an emergency meeting to solve the climate crisis – but here inside the Bela Centre where our leaders are gathering, you can find only a corrupt shuffling of words, designed to allow countries to wriggle out of the bare minimum necessary to prevent the unraveling of the biosphere.

Copenhagen 2009: How Good Is An Agreement That Destroys The World?

December 9, 2009 - The spokesman of the G77, Sudanese Lumumba Stanislaus Kaw Di Aping, has attacked the Copenhagen draft agreement prepared by the Danish Presidency.

"The Danish prime minister is desperate but should not confuse his political career with a deal at any price. There must be a compromise between the will of the rich and poor countries," said the spokesman of the G77 plus China, representing developing countries.

He complained that the draft is designed by and for rich countries and accused Denmark of siding with the developed countries instead of seeking points of agreement between the two blocs: "Developed countries have an historical responsibility for having damaged the atmosphere during the last 200 years. "

The European Union Ask China To Do More To Combate Climate Change

December 4, 2009 - Although China announced last week an ambitious energy efficiency plan to cut down CO2 emissions, Fredrik Reinfeld (Swedish Prime Minister but also the EU rotating president), said on Monday that "we can not solve the challenge of climate change for humanity if China does not assume a leadership role and responsibility".

"So far we believe that global efforts put on the table to mitigate the impact of greenhouse gases are not sufficient," Reinfeld said in the context of an EU-China summit held last Monday in Nanjing, capital of the coastal province of Jiangsu.

Kiss Global Warming Goodbye, Say Hello To Global Cooling

While the UN, the ICCP and the WWF are calling world leaders to make all the necessary efforts to reach an agreement on greenhouse gases reduction at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change which will be held in Copenhagen in December (read Global Warming In The Arctic Above All Predictions), some scientists still dare to express opinions that conflict with the prevailing scientific opinion.

Global Warming In The Arctic Above All Predictions
