Good News: Cannabis could help decreasing risk of death from some influenza strains.

Bad News: Smoking it will not work and may even make things worse.

According to Cannabis Science Inc., which specializes in research and development of cannabis for medicinal purposes, the world may have at their disposal a mean of combating the deadly effects of some influenza strains (including H5N1 avian flu and H1N1 swine flu).

Dr. Robert J. Melamede, Director and Chief Science Officer for CSI reports investigated the use of all cannabinoid extracts and said the scientific foundations for medical purposes and effectiveness in treating some of the most disturbing disease that mankind faces today, including infectious diseases such as influenza and HIV, autoimmune diseases such as ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), multiple sclerosis, arthritis, diabetes, neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, stroke and brain injury, and many forms of cancer.

Dr. Melamede added: "The influenza virus has a unique genetic make up that, in combination with its replicative machinery, has an extraordinary capacity to mutate. As a result, the high lethality of some strains can be attributed to the resulting adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is caused by an excessive immune inflammatory response driven by Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) that leads to the death of respiratory epithelial cells and resulting organ failure. Endocannabinoids are nature’s way of controlling TNF activity. Existing peer reviewed publications have shown that phytocannabinoids can prevent this cell death by mimicking the endocannabinoids that nature has selected to prevent excessive inflammatory immune responses.”
