Internships can be vital in helping to gain experience in a new line of work. With the current instability in the job market and the bleak economic outlook there has never been a better time to gain real world experience within a new career.
In terms of my own situation I have been unemployed for longer than six months and therefore my local Jobcentre have signed me up to the government’s Flexible New Deal program. Originally this meant that I had to attend an external skills resource centre as well as signing on every two weeks at my regular time. At the moment I am not involved in this routine as I am currently three weeks through an internship as an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) Copywriter.
The placement came about after applying for the position through a local employer engagement agency at the centre. Initially I had to interview to be eligible for their specialist work focussed program. The program is there to fast-track unemployed graduate and executive level professionals back into work by organizing motivational job search meetings, networking events and arranging and overseeing work trials (internships)
My internship is taking place at an internet marketing agency called Fresh Egg thirty minutes from where I live. Originally I was introduced to the company by employer engagement and an interview was scheduled. Fortunately I was accepted and invited to begin my internship the following week. I am working a regular working week with my travel paid for six weeks.
Presently the experience of SEO Copywriter intern has been rewarding with a fairly steep learning curve although the challenges of learning on the job are rewarded benefits to the self esteem. Our team has recently taken on a large amount of work so we are scheduled to be busy for the next few weeks. Primarily my role involves creating blog posts to boost search rank results for Fresh Eggs clients. The workload is varied. Each day I am writing up to five new blog posts sometimes for as many as three different clients. This means I could be spending the first couple of hours of the day integrating client links into an article on van leasing and the next couple on an article on this season’s top five gifts. A great deal of creativity can be involved as you may guess!
While I am involved in my internship here I am also gaining first hand experience of SEO and search engine marketing which is giving me a huge insight in what goes on behind the scenes in order to boost a Google ranking! All of this experience is breaking me into a niche of my previous occupation while have something great with which to update my CV which was a problem that I had before beginning my internship.
Personally I would recommend an internship to anyone that is able to do so. You will benefit from the challenge of a new role and the contribution that you make while interacting with new people.
Peter’s previous occupational involvement focussed on web design. He has recently begun a career in web marketing.
