5 Sites to Buy a Gadget
I have to admit I am not really feeling the whole Geek Chic movement. I was the kid in the class growing up who knew everything about Star Wars. I spent my teen years waiting for my Hogwarts letter. I have read almost every comic ever made featuring either The Joker, Poison Ivy or Harley Quinn. I still get into fights with people who don’t think Babylon 5 is one of the greatest science fictions shows of all time.
What I am trying to say here is that I have always been a genuine, hardcore geek. The difference is that I was a geek before it was cool to claim to be one. Modern pop culture has introduced things like the new version of Doctor Who, slick comic book hero adaptions like Batman Begins and The Avengers, and the movie trilogy based on Lord of the Rings changed everything for the fantasy genre.
But despite the growing popularity of all things people mistakenly take for geeky, there are still some places those of us not so into the hype can retreat to. One safe haven for me as as a tech girl is the world of gadgets.
I love keeping up with the latest gadget releases. Whether they are little toys that do nothing more than simulate the sounds of the bridge of the original USS Enterprise, or cutting edge smartphone or tablet, I love it all. These are my six favorite online stores to shop.
1. X-treme Geek
This site has pretty much anything you could possibly want. They even have mini safes that look like Dr Pepper cans. I haven’t bought a whole lot of tech toys here, because it is mostly accessories. But if you need good headphones, a case for your phone or media player or a digital camera, it is a good place to go. Of course, if you want something that is just awesome like oven mitts shaped like Pac Man’s head, or a DIY wooden siege tower, it is all here.
2. Discovery Store
We all know to turn to the Discover Channel if you want to know anything about how they make pennies and/or sharks. But did you know they have a really cool store of their website that is very tech inclusive? Microscopes, electronic drum mats, USB powered lanterns, mini digital photo albums with touch screens, pinball machine attachments for iPhone or iPad…a lot of really cool stuff. Admittedly, it is a bit pricey, but for the occasional tech gift or gadget splurge, it is worth it.
3. Think Geek
I would say this is the most popular site on the list, with the most original products for sale. They have frequent sales of 10% – 30% off, so that is always a plus given the higher price tag of many of their gadget items. They have everything from electronics to geek toys and geek kids. There are even home and garden items, or completely random novelty products. Like the Minecraft pick ax I got my husband for his birthday this year. One thing I really want but would probably never buy because of the price are the wood Bluetooth portable sound system cubes.
4. I Want One Of Those
A UK based site, they ship all over the world and even have a currency converter at the top that will switch all prices between euros and pounds. They also have free shipping within the UK, for all Brits reading this. I always recommend checking out the 3 for ?20 feature, which has some awesome bargains.
5. Deal News
There are a lot of deal sites out there, but this is the one I go to the most. It has a huge selection of deals from around the web in the computer and electronics categories. Some of which are simply amazing, like the $800 laptop I got for $299 last year. I would subscribe to the RSS feed based on your chosen category if I were you, and check back regularly. You will be sure to find some amazing deals on gadgets here.
